SAN RAFAEL, CA (October 14, 2008) – It’s not often that a garage business turns into a consumer phenomenon, but that is exactly what Patricia Kesten, founder and president of ICU Eyewear, did with her company.

Now recognized as the leader in the reading glass industry, ICU Eyewear has sustained a 38 percent growth rate each year since its inception in 1998 and currently has more than 10,000 retail accounts. And it all started when Kesten began needing reading glasses herself.
After one quick trip to the drugstore, Kesten decided that there was a definite need for fashion-forward reading glass styles that could be used as an accessory, rather than just a boring necessity. “I just couldn’t accept the plain-looking, old-fashioned readers that were being offered at the time. I knew I needed to design glasses that reflected the wearer’s personality,” Kesten explained. With this in mind, she created a boutique collection of reading glasses, sunglasses and accessories for women and men.

“The growth and success of ICU Eyewear has been the ultimate fulfillment of an entrepreneurial dream,” Kesten said.

Kesten, who is in her 50s, has been involved in the fashion, gift and accessories industries for over three decades and has experience in all aspects of the industry, including owning three retail stores of her own. “I remember presenting a business plan to my father when I was 24 years old requesting money for an accessories store. This has been a lifelong dream of mine.”
Kesten attributes the success of her company to her passionate drive for business and her insatiable quest for knowledge. “I completely immerse myself in whatever it is I am doing at that moment. If I am strategizing a new tactic, I try to research every last detail in depth,” Kesten said. Kesten also says that “choosing the right employees is priceless. I have an amazing team of individuals who have been instrumental in the success of ICU Eyewear.”
